When you open the crane you should see the serial number in two places. On the frame at the swivel and on the crane under the cylinder across from each other. The Colt.38 Police Positive Special. What is a Colt Official Police.38, serial number 692770 revolver. The gun holds 6 shots, has a square butt, and can have a 2, 4, 5, or 6 inch barrel. The grips are checkered walnut and the finish can be either blued or nickel plated. I hope this was helpful. Experience: Firearms instructor, 40 years experience with firearms.
Colt Serial Number Lookup
Picked this up on GunBroker this afternoon for what I think is a pretty decent price. ($495) This is my first Colt revolver, and I think I'll really like it, and it is C&R (though barely). 1964 dated by the serial number, Colt Police Positive Special, in .38 special. The shop said when I called that the bore is really nice, and it has a nice tight lockup also. Bluing seems to be in really nice shape, same with the grips. What do you guys think?

Colt Police Positive 38 Special Serial Number
Maybe. Is it a 38 S&W (short) or a 38 Special? I appreciate fine old firearms as they are. If it is a heirloom for the family, I would leave it in the original condition. If it has a 'history', I would leave it as is. Now, having said that, you own it and if you really want to clean it and replace the grips for it to be your sometimes house revolver, do so. There is 38 S&W ammo available. 38 Special lead 'cowboy' ammo could be used in it if it is a 38 Special. The revolver has a pretty faithful following. My own 38 S&W Police Positive is loaded with 147 gr Remington ammo. I shoot it every once in awhile. Check into brake parts cleaner in aerosol cans for cleaning. A good application of Hoppes and a generic clening kit are about all you need. Remington or other oil for lube and a spray or wipe of Birchwood Casey Sheath will protect what finish is left. I have bought parts and grips for old Colts on line. Fitz made grips and Dixie sells modern replica grips. www.dixiegunworks.com I would generically suggest a insurance value of $300.00. It could be worth more based on markings, barrel length or special order options. I had a guy ask me to look at his inherited old Colt recently. He really had a Kings Target Colt. It was worth MUCH more than a stock Colt. Gary Reeder has worked on a few old Colts. Doug Turnbull would be a good Colt restorer. I would keep it original but, clean and replace the grips.
